Bart Bes investigates role conceptions of senior officials in the European Commission and how these conceptions influence their behaviour and consequently European governance. Whilst the scope of European governance has developed beyond economic functionality and extended to a growing number of countries, European decision-rules and objectives have become more contested, making Commission officials more vulnerable to the whims of national politics and public opinion. How do they cope with their vulnerable position at the nexus of politics and policy-making?
