Versteeg earned his PhD in 2001 at VU University Amsterdam. His thesis is an analysis of religious experience in a Dutch neo-Pentecostal church, looking into the experiential domains of devotion, music, prophecy and the body (The Ethnography of a Dutch Pentecostal Church: Vineyard Utrecht and the Charismatic Movement. New York: Edwin Mellen Press, 2011). Versteeg has done anthropological fieldwork in the Netherlands since 1993 on the topic of religion in a (post-)secular context. Recent publications include Dangerous Liaisons? Democracy and Religion (co-eds Govert Buijs and Thijl Sunier), VU University Press, 2013, "Inventing a Saint: Religious Fiction in Postcommunist Russia" (co-author Katya Tolstaya), Journal of the American Academy of Religion, 82/1, 70-119, 2014, and "Virtualization of Ritual: Consequences and Meaning" (co-authors Tetske van Dun, Johan Roeland), Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion, vol. 6, 34-47, 2015.
