National and international co-operation

In the Netherlands

Co-operation exists between the department and other faculties of the VU University Amsterdam, namely:

  • The Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (FALW) of which three PhD projects on Science Communication (Da Vinci Institute) are supervised by staff members of the department;
  • The Faculty of Science (FEW) with the interdisciplinary project VUBusiness Information Systems (VUBIS);
  • The Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP); and
  • The Faculty of Arts.

Partnership with the last two faculties pertains to PhD projects on Communication, Language, and Cognition (CLC). The department also collaborates with Communication Science departments at other Dutch universities including the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Radboud University Nijmegen, and the University of Twente.

International cooperation

We have established international contacts through collaboration with staff from KU Leuven (Belgium), University of Cardiff (UK), London School of Economics (UK), Macquarie University of Sydney (Australia), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA), and the University of Michigan (USA).

Intensive collaboration with the University of Michigan has resulted in the addition of Brad Bushman to the department as visiting professor. Prof. Bushman is an internationally renowned expert on media-induced aggression and has been visiting the department yearly for a two-month period in which collective research projects have been undertaken.

The latest development in the department's international relations is the co-operation with Peter Vorderer (USC Annenberg School for Communication, USA), one of the leading scholars in media psychology (and editor of the ISI journal Media Psychology).
