Hanna L. Muehlenhoff joined the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Vrije Universiteit as a postdoctoral researcher of the Centre for Contemporary European Studies Amsterdam (ACCESS EUROPE) on 1 September 2016. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Tuebingen where she also worked as a lecturer and research associate.
Hanna L. Muehlenhoff’s main research interests are the EU’s foreign policies and Turkey-EU relations with a special focus on EU civil society promotion and gender policies. In her work, she combines a Foucauldian governmentality lens with feminist theory. She is especially interested in the relations between neo-liberal rationalities and depoliticization. Her PhD analyzed whether and how the EU’s funding of civil society organizations in Turkey depoliticized the organizations supported. During her time at ACCESS EUROPE she aims to study the effects of EU policies promoting women’s empowerment and human security abroad and to define the relations between empowerment, governmentality and (de)politicization.
