Foreign Large-Scale Food Production and Land Use in Ethiopia

As the result of 2007/2008 global food crisis many import-dependent countries found out that they are vulnerable to food insecurity, and tried to find alternative mechanisms in alleviating the problem. Countries from South East Asia, Europe and Middle East are vastly involved in large-scale agricultural investment in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this case, the Ethiopian government lease-out large acre of land to investors that are mainly engaged in the agricultural sector. The government intension is to use these investments as an opportunity to create; social infrastructure (such as schools, roads and hospitals), generating employment, providing access to markets and technology for farmers and bringing higher regional or national tax revenue. On the other hand, there are scholars who argue that this development intervention may have unintended side effects on the ecosystem and livelihood of the people. This research project explores how these kinds of development interventions are shaped by global and local policy makers and development agents.
